The Rupes™ Half Sheet SO31TE Random Orbital Sander Review
July 12, 2010
"I'm a firm believer in the woodworking axiom that one can never have too many sanders and to that end, I waited with baited breath to get my hands on the new Rupes Half Sheet SO31TE Random Orbital Sande!" Read More...
I was looking for two things, something that will satisfy my need for that distinctive Red/Bllack Rupes comfort and precision, and something small. I've used a number of sanders and there are a few that stand out above the rest, but the Rupes SO31TE was something to fall in love with.
I'll try to cover a few of the features that makes the Rupes SO31TE stand out in a crowded pack, and since many people who buy tools over the net don't actually get a chance to touch them until they purchase, I'll add the specs and some glossy pics.
The first thing you notice is the Italian design, and I hate using the words "curvaceous" and "sleek", and using "Sports Car" as a metaphor, but that's exactly what it is. The way you hold it is just luxurious. The subtle grooves and cushy pad make holding it actually feel nice, comfortable enough to use for a long time, even with the powerful 380W motor it didn't vibrate the heck out of your hand. It felt solid and smooth, and far superior to any sander I've used.
Out of the box, (of which, you would think that for a quality sander, the Italians would splash some cash to pretty up the packaging), are the usual suspects - Interchangeable backing pad, wrench - but what sets this machine apart is its manoeuvrability and handling. I hooked it up to our dust extraction system and was comfortable to move around in a cinch with its pivotable connection, and took away stock as if it was dust when using some heavier paper. After I sprayed a few panels it was kind enough to tidy up a nervous hand with some lighter grit.
There's few brands these days that seem to stand out, if you're in the market for a new orbital sander, and if you can get your hands on one of these, do so. Check out the specs and write-up..

"When comparing durability and resistance - as well as exceptional good looks - nothing lasts like an Evic polyurethane kitchen." Read More...
Polyurethane is a highly durable and prestige choice for kitchen and bathroom cabinetry. It not only looks great, it is exceptionally resistant to conditions normally found in kitchens and bathrooms such as heat, moisture and stains.
When properly cared for, surfaces coated in Evic polyurethane can last for twenty years or more and look almost as good as the day they were painted. In fact, a properly finished polyurethane door can often outlast the hinges it hangs on!
When Durability and Looks Count!
Polyurethane is the first choice in coating kitchen and bathroom cabinetry where versatility, durability and good looks count.
Not all finishes are created equal. Many may look good, but are unsuitable in moist environments for long periods. Others have no tolerance to heat and will mar or stain easily. Some discolour and blister even under normal conditions. Others still can only be used on flat surfaces, limiting their appeal and effectiveness. No other coating (even other paints) comes close to the versatility, durability and finish of Evic polyurethane.
Improved through decades of experience and dedication to development, Evic polyurethanes are ideal even in extreme conditions for kitchen and bathroom cabinetry. Resistant to stains and marring. Unaffected by steam, excess moisture and constant temperature changes. Without cracking, warping, shrinking or delaminating.
And while the finish is not indestructable, it has proven time and again to retain gloss and colour for years when sensibly maintained..
Quality Professionals Use Evic Polyurethane
Evic Paint & Colour Technology has been Australia’s leader in polyurethane for more than twenty years and are the choice “Quality Professionals” use when it comes to polyurethane finishes.
Evic offer the widest range of finishes and textures available in virtually any colour. If you can provide a colour swatch, we can match it.
And when it comes to clear polyurethanes for use over timber, Evic offer systems superior to lacquers in every respect for quality applications.
So for durability and finish that lasts, accept only Evic polyurethane.

In order to ensure your new polyurethane kitchen looks this great well into the future, please take note of the following recommendations while cleaning polyurethane surfaces.
Recommended Cleaners Light Cleaning: To enhance gloss and remove fingermarks and handprints, we recommend using a 3M High Performance Cloth or similar microfibre cloth. This will maintain a chemical-free pristine finish.
General Cleaning: All but the most stubborn stains can be removed by using mild detergent, warm water and a lint-free (preferably microfibre) cloth. If this method is insufficient, we recommend Spray & Wipe (or an equivalent product).
Stubborn Stains: Stains that are difficult to remove may be cleaned using Spray & Wipe or an equivalent cleaner. Under no circumstances should an abrasive cleaner (or abrasive cloth or scourer) be used on polyurethane surfaces.
Caution!!! DO NOT USE ABRASIVE CLEANERS ON POLYURETHANE SURFACES!
Abrasive Cleaners (such as Gumption and Jif) will strip the surface of gloss and instantly deteriorate the finish.
Whilst polyurethane surfaces are generally resistant to solvents, we also recommend against using solvent-based products when cleaning.

"734 Primer is Evic’s latest development in 2K polyurethane pigmented primer for MDF substrates. In short, 734 delivers faster, easier, and higher quality finishing." Read More...
“Black-lines” are almost eliminated by this primer - outstanding sharp edge coverage is combined with excellent resistance to sand throughs, significantly reducing the number of repaints. This primer even resists sand throughs when using a hand held orbital or wide belt sander with a little care.
Sanding is easier – excellent flow and levelling is coupled with just the right amount of powdering. Less time and effort is required to produce a smooth surface ready for top coating. The right balance between ease of sanding and preventing rub-throughs has been struck, which in turn reduces nuisance sanding dust.
MDF fibres don’t tend to “fluff up” – this makes sanding routes and pockets easier, as less work is required to achieve a smooth finish. Pre-sanding the route (or edge) gives an even better result.
Gloss retention is excellent – the gloss hold out is superior to other primers, giving a higher quality of finishing, which may bring you in more business.
Technical Notes from the Field
734 is different to other primers. You will get the best results using your normal topcoat setup. e.g. a 1.4mm gravity (or 1.5mm suction) gun, 45 psi at the gun, 6 psi at the pressure pot (if using). This product also works very well with air assisted airless topcoat setups (as used by spray robots).
734 performs at its best when applied at only a moderately high film build – trust us on this one. Polyester users should take note of this – don’t spray 734 like it’s a polyester (it isn’t!).
We recommend that you spray A and B mixed ready for use (though a few users add 5% solvent). There is the option of 730B hardener (fast), or 732B (medium-slow), for varied weather conditions.
Pre-sanding MDF edges with 240 grade paper “seals” them, giving an even better result.
This primer works best when finish sanded with 400 grit paper for an excellent gloss finish.
Using a topcoat setup, 730A or 732A users should be able to learn to spray 734 fairly easily. However, if you are block stacking panels to spray edges, we recommend a flash off time of five minutes between coats. This may be slightly longer than usual, but the final result is much superior.
Polyester users (such as 750A, 766A, or 1560A) should really take note of the warning about excessive film builds. And if you are new to polyurethane primers, you will enjoy a much longer potlife of several hours, a dramatically more pleasant odour, fast tack-off times and overspray that doesn’t stay wet for a long time. The typical “cloud” of polyester sanding dust will also be greatly diminished.
The gorgeous paint you know with a "Fresh New Look"
June 1, 2008
"At the beginning of the month, Evic will launch the first stage in a revolutionary new labeling system, designed to be able to give the beautiful paint that you know and love, a fresh new look." Read More...
The redesign aims to give the range a consistent, more premium look, as well as making labels clearer and easier to understand. The benefits are seen not only in the look of the can, but as we've heard from a wide range of clients already, the functionality is dramatically improved.
"The label is easier to read, easier to grab off our shelf because it stands out so much and there's no chance of accidentally picking the wrong one"
Marketing Manager Glen Toovey says "It's a great achievement and feat, to be able to have labels that print 'On-the-Fly', with any tiny bit or skeric of information that you need! Who else can put the clients name, address, what colour it is, the type of paint and gloss level, individual barcoding, and a unique background - all on the one label?
"It was critical that the new labels integrate and mesh with the old ones - for the moment Part A's use the new labels, while the Part B's use the old. They need to look different, but the same...! It wasn't so much about giving the can a 'new look', but introducing a systematic approach to improving workability with our clients, and a better Evic experience!"
It is being soft-launched over the following month, and should be fully implemented by July '08.
"Evic is passionate about it's customers, no matter how big or small you are. That's why we do everything we can to help you on your way to establishing your business... In style." Read More...

We knew people wanted TShirts you can use for a few weeks and discard - thats just the nature of the industry - you can wear something nice painting and spraying, but you might as well right it off after a few days! So it's only natural that your Paint and Accessories distributer go into the clothing business right? Why not?

"With 2008 quickly approaching, it's time again to draw on your home loan to buy the latest video games or the just-released 'Tickle Me Elmo' doll to fill the stockings, stock up on sunscreen for the trip up the coast and sit in traffic in that 4 hour car ride, sweating bullets as you try to keep the kids from tearing out each other's hair out and another empty promise of "I'll turn this car around right now!", and of course, time to pick up your Official 2008 Evic Group Calendar!" "When the Global™ range was first released, it shot up the sales list at a rapid rate. Quickly it became the favourite with many applicators. Over time we started to get feedback that the Satin & Matt were so easy to apply, so flat and even, virtually foolproof. "Could we make the gloss the same"?
Easy said but difficult to achieve." Read More...
The satin & matt finishes have many advantages including their flatting pigments which allow the coating to flow over sharp edges easily while resisting the temptation to sag on the edges.
Shaun Patrick, Technical Manager took on this challenge and has tinkered and experimented with new ideas over the last three years. Significant changes were made ast year and all Beta customers reported the same results.
"The new 1600 Global™ Gloss is instantly flat and level off the gun. What you see is what you get. Increases in titanium dioxide level and modified edge behaviour means good-bye to black lines showing through on sharp edges".
Jamie Clark, from Evic says that besides the huge change in application, making it just as easy as the Satin & Matt to apply. It's the next day finish that excites him and his customers. "It's so smooth and level, just as it looked when it was wet...AND THE GLOSS?!!!!" Jamie believes the cured finish looks better than Evic's 2000 Spraythane™. Well done Shaun.
A Smoother, Flatter surface with the newly improved 732 Polyurethane Primer
September 18, 2006
"Significant changes to the product has reduced resistance to high shear at spraying viscosity. Increased titanium dioxide means higher white coverage, especially on edges and darker substances. Even Incan stability has improved, meaning easier stirring even after long distance transport." Read More...
Try 732 Polyurethane Primer, we think gives a smoother, flatter surface ready for sanding with better coverage. What's more, it's quicker to apply than any other primer we tested against!
1560 Global™ Polyester Primer - it keeps getting better and better!
September 3, 2006
"This primer just gets better and better and is still under review for some minor improvements. The praise for 1560 features just keeps coming "The best flow and easiest sanding of any primer I've tried!" and "this primer saves time and money every day!". Even though we continually hear these comments, one of 1560's major assets is not noticed for a few days." Read More...
Try this. Primer, a panel with 1560 and one with any other primer available.
Sand both with 400 and topcoat both with the same gloss finish.
Compare the 2 panels over the next week and we would be surprised if the 1560 primed panel didn't look better, with the top coat showing less shrink back and a much sharper gloss. See for yourself, Global™ 1560 Primer does more than you might first think!

Four of the premier stands at the show - Holden, Nissan, Bentley and the gorgeous new Ferrari stands - used Evic Group products extensively as the backdrop to their latest offerings.
The Ferrari Stand
The Ferrari stand, a new edition in 2005, was painted with 2000 Spraythane™ in Ferrari Red and Ferrari Black, a highly reflective finish, reknowned for its DOI (Definition of Image) Properties - a mirror like Finish!
And what a standout! Gold Coast Classic Lacquer sprayed a beautiful finish, capturing the heart of the image of Ferrari. Sleek. Smooth. Alluring.
The Bentley Collection
The Bentley Collection was a natural standout at the show. And once again Gold Coast Classic Lacquer showcased Evic Paint & Technology's sensational Spraythane 2000. Bentley Green stood bold against the gold trim and sparkle of Benley's logo, and was a prominant feature of the stand.
The Holden Stand
With one of the largest stands, Holden showed off its large fleet with models such as the Monaro getting pride of place on the show floor. High-gloss Holden Red teamed with hues of silver offer no mistake as to which stand you had walked into. Holden also took the opportunity to present one of its latest innovations.
Introduced at the Sydney Motor Show 2003, was Holden's foray into the All Wheel Drive market with its CrossTrac system. The vibrant silver "X" was used as the setting to display the redesigned chassis towards the rear of their stand.
The Nissan Stand
Just like Holden, Nissan brought out some new models to entice the public. Including their new 350Z Roadster. Housed in a futuristic stark white stand, the cars immediately "jumped out". Generally stands such as these make a tour of the Australian motor shows in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne before being redesigned for future shows.
The new stand shows off the beatuiful Spraythane 850. The unmistakeable textured finish of Spraythane 850 complements the Nissan displays perfectly. Because of its availablility of colours and wide range of gloss level, it was a natural choice for the sprayerpainters, making it a standout at the show.
